How to select accounting software?

There are many types of accounting software in the market. If you want to purchase an accounting software for your company, maybe you just want to get the best one in the world. But actually there is no such thing. There is no "best" one, but only the one suit your needs. Every accounting software product has its own features. Before getting one, you should know what you want exactly. You can ask yourself following basic questions to help you make the decision:

Can this accounting software create the sort of financial report I need? The main purpose of using accounting software is to produce a correct and accurate financial statement. But be careful, some software may not produce the kind of financial report you want. So before buying the accounting software, you should make sure that it can create the kind of financial reporting you need. For financial reporting, many accounting software products incorporate two third-party products—FRx and Crystal Reports—into their packages rather than develop their own. So before buying an accounting product, you should make sure whether it works with FRx or not, or whether the built-in features exhibits similar and comparable features.

Does this accounting software have some special features I need? Such as the ability to hotlink accounting data to an Excel or Lotus 1-2-3 spreadsheet, to convert numbers into graphics, to alert users to predefined financial conditions, to create pivot table, or including a wide variety of rating ratios.

Can the accounting software company give the technical support I will need? No matter how good an accounting software product is, you still need the vendor’s support. In this case, you’d better choose those vendors which are reliable and have all the resources you need.

Other questions include: Is the accounting product's account-number structure suitable for my business? Can it handle foreign currency? Is it easy to use and how much does it cost?
